Shock
Shock is a life-threatening condition resulting from inadequate oxygen delivery to tissues due to circulatory failure. It requires immediate veterinary treatment.
Key Facts
- Most common cause in pets: trauma (fights, hit by car, gunshots)
- Other causes: poisoning, insect stings, severe vomiting/diarrhea, infections/sepsis, burns, heart failure
- Early signs: excitement or subdued behavior, rapid heart rate, normal or pale gums
- Late signs: extremely pale or blue gums, weak/irregular pulse, cold extremities, glazed eyes, stupor to coma
- Loss of as little as 2 teaspoons of blood per pound of body weight can cause shock
- Treatment: IV fluids, oxygen, surgery, warming
- Do not pour water into mouth (aspiration risk); do not encourage walking
- Covering with blanket is especially important in cats to prevent heat loss
- Species: dogs and cats
