Drowning
Drowning is suffocation caused by the lungs filling with water. Even pets that appear to recover can succumb to delayed pulmonary edema (dry drowning) hours later.
Key Facts
- All pets that fall into water should be evaluated by a veterinarian
- Dry drowning: delayed fluid buildup in lungs can be fatal hours after rescue
- Position pet on side with head slightly lower than body for drainage
- Pull tongue forward and gently push on chest wall and stomach to expel water
- Begin CPR if needed after clearing airways
- Cover with blanket to prevent heat loss
- Most cats and dogs instinctively swim but cannot exit pools at the edge; they must find steps
- Secondary complications: electrolyte imbalance, hypothermia, pneumonia
- Species: dogs and cats
