Syncope
Syncope is sudden loss of consciousness or marked weakness caused by reduced blood flow to the brain. It can result from low blood sugar, neurological diseases, or heart disease.
Key Facts
- Position pet with head down and hindquarters elevated to improve brain blood flow
- Cover with a blanket to preserve body heat
- Do not give anything by mouth (aspiration risk)
- Do not attempt to shock the pet into consciousness
- Always seek veterinary attention even if pet recovers quickly
- Several underlying causes are serious and require diagnostic testing
