Hypoglycemia

Hypoglycemia is dangerously low blood sugar that can cause seizures, collapse, and irreversible brain damage if prolonged. Especially common in toy breed dogs and diabetic pets on insulin.

Key Facts

  • Toy breeds (Yorkshire Terrier, Maltese) are predisposed
  • Diabetic pets on insulin can develop hypoglycemia from insulin overdose or missed meals
  • Signs: weakness, wobbliness, drunken appearance, trembling, seizures, collapse
  • If pet is alert: offer a small irresistible meal
  • If non-responsive or seizing: rub Karo syrup, honey, or sugar water on gums (1 tbsp per 5 lbs)
  • Always feed before giving insulin to reduce risk
  • FreeStyle Libre readings may not always match actual blood glucose; verify with glucometer
  • Prolonged low blood sugar causes irreversible brain injury
  • Proceed immediately to a veterinarian after first aid
  • Species: dogs and cats
