Paralysis
Paralysis is the inability to voluntarily move a part of the body. It can be rigid or flaccid, is often accompanied by severe pain, and is always a veterinary emergency.

- Intervertebral disc rupture is the most common sudden cause, especially in Dachshunds
- Ruptured discs cause spinal cord swelling; severe cases need immediate surgery
- Also caused by trauma (falls, car accidents), spinal tumors, and animal fights
- Spine must be immobilized before and during transport
- Many paralyzed pets can walk again with proper treatment
- Recovery may require weeks of physical therapy and help with urination
- A neurologist or surgeon referral may be needed for best outcome
