Key Facts

• Note whether bleeding is from one nostril or both
• Apply ice pack (covered in cloth) on bridge and side of nose to constrict vessels
• Keep pet calm; excitement increases blood pressure and worsens bleeding
• Do not put anything up the nose; sneezing will dislodge clots
• Seek veterinary attention if profuse bleeding or lasting more than 5 minutes
• Causes: foreign bodies (foxtails), polyps, infections, poisoning, bleeding disorders, cancer
• Check gums for pallor (white gums = emergency)
• Species: dogs and cats
