Blood Pressure Monitoring
Blood pressure monitoring is essential for detecting hypertension in pets. It is part of the IRIS sub-staging protocol for chronic-kidney-disease and is recommended for all senior pets and those with predisposing conditions.
Key Facts
- Normal systolic: <160 mmHg. High risk: >180 mmHg. Mildly elevated: 150-159 mmHg.
- Only systolic pressure is measurable non-invasively in pets (diastolic requires arterial catheter)
- Inflatable cuff placed on foot, foreleg, or tail; ultrasonic probe detects pulse
- At least 5 readings taken to account for "white coat effect" (stress at the vet)
- Part of CKD IRIS sub-staging (normotensive, borderline, hypertensive, severely hypertensive)
- Recommended for all pets with CKD, hyperthyroidism, heart disease, or after sudden neurologic events
- Patients on treatment should be rechecked every 2-4 months
- Species: dogs and cats
