Dystocia

Dystocia is a difficult or obstructed birth in dogs and cats. About two-thirds of cases requiring veterinary intervention need an emergency C-section.

  • Seek vet if strong regular contractions produce no young in 15-30 minutes
  • Intermittent contractions with no offspring should be evaluated after 1.5-2 hours
  • Dark green vaginal discharge (lochia) should be followed by a puppy/kitten within 5-10 minutes
  • Heavy bleeding requires immediate veterinary examination
