Key Facts
- Most commonly caused by interaction of serotonergic drugs (SSRIs, tramadol, trazodone, MAOIs)
- Can occur from ingestion of owner's antidepressant medications
- Signs: agitation, tremors, hyperthermia, rapid heart rate, dilated pupils, diarrhea, vocalization
- Severe cases: seizures, muscle rigidity, death
- Treatment: stop offending drug(s), cyproheptadine (serotonin antagonist), supportive care, cooling
- Onset usually within 1-6 hours of drug exposure
- Species: dogs and cats
