Rectal Prolapse

Eversion of the rectum through the anus, most common in young animals under 4 months.

Key Facts

  • Looks like red/pink tube protruding from anus
  • Caused by prolonged straining from parasites, diarrhea, constipation, or obstruction
  • Predisposed breeds: Manx cat, Boston terrier
  • Treatment: clean, replace tissue, purse-string suture to prevent recurrence
  • Severe cases may need surgical resection or colopexy
  • Must treat underlying cause to prevent recurrence
