Pyelonephritis
Pyelonephritis is kidney inflammation, usually from infection. It occurs when a bladder infection ascends through the ureters into the kidney. This form of kidney failure has the most potential for reversal or partial reversal among all causes of chronic-kidney-disease.
Key Facts
- Caused by untreated or incompletely treated bladder infections
- Has the most potential to reverse among CKD causes
- Urine culture is essential for early detection (standard urinalysis may miss infection due to dilute urine)
- Produces significant urinary protein, which can lead to incorrect IRIS sub-staging if not identified
- Species: dogs and cats
