Potassium
Potassium is an electrolyte that the kidneys conserve under normal conditions. In chronic-kidney-disease, failing kidneys lose the ability to conserve potassium, causing levels to drop and leading to muscle weakness. Cats are particularly vulnerable to potassium depletion.
Key Facts
- Drops in CKD, especially in cats (starting around Stage II)
- Causes muscle weakness when low
- Supplementation is commonly needed
- renal-diet helps but may be insufficient alone
- Species: dogs and cats (cats especially affected)
