• Paraphimosis: penis extended out of sheath for >2 hours (not an erection); medically urgent
• Untreated paraphimosis can lead to tissue death and may require amputation
• Common causes: hair matting around base, rolled sheath edges, trauma, infection, post-mating
• Predisposed breeds: Bouvier des Flandres, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Labrador
• Treatment: cleaning, lubrication, hair removal, swelling reduction, pain management
• Phimosis: rare; sheath opening too narrow for penis to exit; can block urination
• Phimosis treatment: surgical widening of the sheath opening
• Keep intact males' genital area clean and trimmed to prevent matting
• Species: dogs primarily, cats (long-haired breeds)
