Iris Coloboma
Congenital thinning or hole in the iris causing light sensitivity, most common in Australian Shepherds.
Key Facts
- Born with the condition — area of iris never formed properly
- Does not affect vision and does not progress
- Large holes cause squinting from excess light entering pupil
- Genetic — affected animals should not be bred
- No treatment available; dog goggles (Doggles) may help with squinting
- May be associated with cataracts, lens colobomas, retinal colobomas
- Screened during CAER (Companion Animal Eye Registry) exams
