Hip Dislocation

Hip dislocation occurs when the femoral head pops out of the hip socket (acetabulum). It is usually caused by trauma (hit by car) but can occur from degenerative disease.

Key Facts

  • Usually traumatic in origin; can result from hip dysplasia
  • Signs: sudden non-weight-bearing lameness, affected leg appears shorter, pain
  • Diagnosis: X-rays confirm direction of dislocation
  • Treatment options: closed reduction (manual replacement under anesthesia), FHO (femoral head ostectomy), total hip replacement
  • Closed reduction must be attempted within 24-48 hours; success rate ~50%
  • FHO removes the femoral head; the body forms a false joint; best for smaller animals
  • Total hip replacement: best long-term outcome but most expensive
  • Species: dogs and cats
