Urine Protein Creatinine Ratio
The urine protein:creatinine ratio (UPC) is a test performed on a urine sample to quantify protein loss through the kidneys. It is a key component of chronic-kidney-disease IRIS sub-staging. Excessive protein in the urine indicates damage to the kidney's filtration system (glomerular disease).
Key Facts
- Sub-staging categories: non-proteinuric, borderline proteinuric, proteinuric
- Proteinuria indicates glomerular damage (a more severe form of kidney failure)
- Higher urinary protein loss makes hypertension harder to control long-term
- pyelonephritis can falsely elevate UPC, leading to incorrect sub-staging
- Species: dogs and cats
