Pulmonary Edema

Fluid accumulation in the lungs causing breathing difficulty, either from heart disease or other causes.

Key Facts

  • Two types: cardiogenic (heart failure/CHF) and non-cardiogenic (NCPE)
  • NCPE caused by direct damage to lung blood vessels from inflammation, sepsis, or trauma
  • Signs: breathlessness, rapid/difficult breathing, worsens when lying down
  • Small breed dogs with CHF usually have loud heart murmur
  • NCPE does NOT respond to diuretics (unlike CHF)
  • Chest X-rays confirm fluid; additional imaging may distinguish type
  • Oxygen supplementation and treating primary illness are key for NCPE
